Why won't my RV slide-out come in or go out?
A slide that will not move usually traces to one of a handful of failures, and the right fix starts with identifying which. The most common causes are worn or stripped gears, a sheared shear pin, a failed slide motor or actuator, a blown hydraulic seal or low fluid on hydraulic systems, a dead or low house battery, or an obstruction and binding from a room that has drifted out of square. We run a full operational check, find the actual point of failure, and show it to you before we quote the repair, because a guess on a slide is an expensive way to be wrong.
The different slide-out systems and how they fail
Not all slides are built the same, and each system fails in its own way. Rack-and-pinion and Schwintek in-wall systems run on electric motors and gear tracks that wear, jump teeth, or strip, and Schwintek rooms in particular need correct alignment or they bind and chew their own gears. Cable-driven slides depend on cables and pulleys that stretch and fray and pull a room in crooked when they go. Hydraulic slides use a pump, cylinders, and seals that leak and lose pressure with age. Through-frame and rack systems carry heavy rooms and wear at the gears and rollers. We work on all of them, which matters, because the part that fails on a Schwintek slide is nothing like the part that fails on a hydraulic one.
Why is my slide-out leaking water?
A slide that leaks is almost always a seal or alignment problem, not the slide mechanism itself. The wiper and bulb seals around the room dry out, crack, and stop sealing, or the room sits slightly out of square so the seals no longer meet evenly, and water finds its way in along the top or sides. Left alone, that water softens the floor and wall around the slide and turns a seal job into structural repair. We inspect the seals and the room's alignment, reseal or realign as needed, and because we are also a full body and paint and body shop, we can address any water damage to the surrounding wall in the same place rather than sending you elsewhere.
What does slide-out maintenance involve?
Regular slide-out service is the cheapest insurance against a slide failing on a trip. About once a year we run a full operational check, clean and lubricate the gears, tracks, blocks, and linkages with the correct lubricant, inspect the shear pins, gears, hoses, seals, and connectors, and adjust the room so it sits square and seals evenly. This preventive maintenance catches a worn gear or a drying seal while it is still a small fix, instead of the roadside failure that strands a room open or closed. For RVers heading out the 15 to the river or the 10 toward the desert, a slide that will not retract is the kind of problem that ends a trip before it starts.
What will slide-out repair cost?
Slide repair is quoted from the actual fault, because lubricating a sticky track and replacing a hydraulic cylinder are very different jobs. We diagnose first, show you what failed, and estimate from there. Estimates carry a budget for parts at the start and true up to the parts the repair actually uses once we are into the system and know exactly what it needs. If the failure caused water damage or the job ties into a collision claim, we can handle that in-house too. You authorize the work before we begin, and we walk you through the estimate so there are no surprises at pickup.

Why does my slide-out grind or stall halfway out?
Grinding and stalling usually point to worn or jumping gears, a failing motor, low battery voltage, or a room that has drifted out of square and is binding. We find the actual cause on an operational check rather than throwing parts at it, and we show you what we find before quoting.
Can you fix a slide-out that is stuck open or stuck closed?
Yes. A stuck slide is one of the most common reasons owners call us, and most are recoverable once we identify whether the failure is in the motor, the gears, the hydraulics, the battery, or the alignment. Getting the room safely moving again is the first priority.
My slide-out leaks when it rains. Is that the mechanism?
Usually not. A leaking slide is almost always worn wiper and bulb seals or a room sitting out of square, not the drive system. We reseal or realign the room, and we can repair any water damage to the surrounding wall in the same shop.
How often should an RV slide-out be serviced?
About every 12 months, or before a long trip. Annual lubrication, inspection, and alignment is what keeps a slide from failing when you are far from home, and it is far cheaper than an emergency repair.
